Pomeranian is a cute breed of dog. It is sometimes called Pom. This breed originated in Lapland and Greenland. It is said that Pomeranians are very similar to wolf Spitz in weight, height and hair. It is true because Pomeranian originated from the bloodline of the Spitz dogs. Spitz’s are the sled dogs. Pomeranians can be perfect house dogs because of their loving nature.
Characteristics
Pomeranians look like baby foxes. They have doll like faces, dark eyes, dark nose and sharper teeth when compared to other breed of dogs. Pomeranian snaps if it is teased. These dogs grow to a height of 11 inches and weigh about 6 pounds. They can be hurt easily if dropped. The life expectancy of this breed is about 15 years.
Grooming
The coat of Pomeranian should be kept clean and healthy. Regular brushing is needed as they have 2 layers of fur. To prevent tangling, it is a must to brush the fur every day.
These dogs are constant shedders and hence lot of care should be taken. Brushing and grooming takes time but it’s easy to do.
Living conditions
Pomeranians are active at indoors and can adjust well to living in an apartment. It should be given exercises regularly. It should not be kept in sunlight for longer time as it cannot tolerate overheat.
Health concerns
This type of breed is more liable to dental problems. If the dog’s teeth fall out, it would be difficult for the dog to consume food. So, the owners should be very careful and if any issue with the teeth, the dog should be immediately taken to the Veterinarian. Feeding food that is hard helps to strengthen the dog’s teeth and gums.
It even develops few health problems like dislocated patella, a problem related to the knee. It is also liable to slipped stifle. If you notice any other problems, consult a veterinarian to know the root cause of the problem.
Eyes and ears of Pomeranian should also be taken care and monthly check-ups are essential.
Training
Pomeranian is so energetic and it loves to learn new things and is very excited to learn. Pomeranians can be trained easily and are very intelligent. The first thing they should be trained is on behavioural problems. Next thing is that the owners have to spend some time playing with the Pomeranians. The owners have to build up a relationship based on mutual respect. This can be done by establishing house rules on the first day when you get it home. Taking your Pomeranian out from time to time is important. Pomeranians love to go for walks and can happily play in a garden if its owner is available.
